How much gravel do I need?
Multiply length × width (feet) × compacted depth (inches ÷ 12), divide by 27 for cubic yards, then multiply by the material density for tons. Dirt Truck plans road base and pit run at about 1.55 tons per cubic yard, crushed aggregate at 1.45, sand at 1.35 and drain rock at 1.25. Add 10% for compaction and waste. Our free aggregate calculator does the math and tells you how many truckloads it is.
Driveways and parking areas
Most gravel driveways use 4–6 inches of compacted road base over a stable subgrade. Larger lots and roads may call for pit run as a sub-base under a road-base top course. Confirm the exact spec with your engineer or supplier.

Common questions
How many tons of gravel fit in a dump truck?
It depends on the truck and legal weight limits. A tandem dump commonly hauls roughly 12–15 tons, while a truck and pup can haul considerably more. Use the Truckload & Payload calculator on Dirt Truck with your truck's registered and empty weights for a real number.
What is the difference between road base and pit run?
Pit run is unscreened material straight from the pit with larger rock, often used as a sub-base or fill. Road base is crushed and graded to a smaller maximum size so it compacts into a firm driving surface.
